Matthew Short is an Australian professional cricketer who has represented his country as a top-order batter in the shortest format of the sport (T20I). Before making his international debut in August 2023, he was a part of Australia’s squad at the 2014 edition of the ICC (International Cricket Council – the global governing body of the sport) Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Australia had finished in 4th place in the 16-team competition. In the Australian domestic circuit, Matthew has played for his home state of Victoria (2014-15-Present) across formats. In franchise-based T20 leagues, he has turned out for the Melbourne Renegades (2014-15-2017-18) and Adelaide Strikers (2018-19-Present) in the BBL (Big Bash League); and Punjab Kings (2023) in the IPL (Indian Premier League). Matthew has also played for the Northern Superchargers (2023) in The Hundred, a professional franchise 100-ball cricket tournament that was introduced by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board – the governing body of the sport in these 2 countries) as a new format of cricket that was played for the first time in July and August 2021.

  • Matthew first came into the spotlight in 2014 when he finished as Australia’s 2nd-highest run-getter (237 runs in 6 innings) at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
  • In the BBL (Big Bash League – Australia’s premier professional franchise-based T20 league), he broke through in the tournament’s 2021-22 edition (11th season) – finishing as the tournament’s 3rd highest run-getter overall.
  • Representing the Adelaide Strikers, Matthew scored 493 runs in 16 innings at a stellar strike rate of 155.52 runs scored per 100 balls faced. He also struck 26 sixes in the tournament (the 2nd most overall). His performances were vital in helping the Adelaide Strikers finish in 4th place in the league stage, and 3rd place overall after the playoff stage of the competition.
  • Matthew was named the ‘Player of the Series’ in the next (2022-23) season of the BBL even though the Adelaide Strikers finished in 7th place in the league stage. He finished as the tournament’s 2nd highest run-getter overall, scoring 458 runs in 14 innings. He also struck 18 sixes in the tournament (the 4th most overall).
  • During this season, in early January 2023, captaining the Adelaide Strikers in a stopgap capacity, he scored his maiden century in the BBL. He smashed 100 runs not out from just 59 balls to help the Adelaide Strikers successfully hunt down a target of 230 runs – the then-highest run chase in the history of the tournament. Matthew was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for this incredible performance.
  • He made his T20I (and international) debut for Australia on August 30, 2023, in the 1st match of a 3-match bilateral away series against South Africa. 2 days later, in the 2nd match of the series, he smoked 66 runs off just 30 balls (including 7 fours and 4 sixes) to help Australia chase down the target of 165 runs inside 15 overs. Australia’s 8-wicket win in this match gave it an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
